In recent years, image analysis methods have improved and computing power has increased to the point where computers can contribute significantly to, and in some cases replace, the detection of disease by medical specialists. In this talk, two examples of the use of computers in the detection of cancer will be be presented. Dr. Paul Jackway of the University of Queensland will describe his work on the detection of cervical cancer and Dr. Murk Bottema of Flinders University will discuss detection of early breast cancer. Both projects are concerned with improving the performance of labour intensive and error prone screening programs by automatic image analysis.
